Florida Man Arrested for DUI with Property Damage, Personal Injury

A man from Naples, Florida faces charges for multiple counts of DUI after he failed to switch lanes as required by Florida Statute.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Artemio Godinez Sanchez, 30, was driving south in his Buick sedan on Collier Boulevard towards Manatee Road when a police officer was conducting a traffic stop with his emergency lights on. Sanchez’s car reportedly drifted into the southbound shoulder and swiped the patrol car while the officer was filling out paperwork.

Sanchez also collided with the Honda sedan that had been pulled over for failure to move over for an emergency vehicle. That driver of the Honda was not injured from collision, but Sanchez and the deputy were treated at Physician’s Regional Medical Center. Police arrested Sanchez for DUI, two counts of DUI with property damage, and DUI with personal injury.

In South Florida, attorney William Moore, has reported an increased number of DUI arrests due to the implementation of the new "Move over law". This Florida Statute requires that a driver change lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle. “Broward county police officers are using this law to stop vehicles without justification. In many instances, I have heard of officers actually setting up –Move Over- violations.” The illegal stopping of a vehicle is the best way to get a DUI dismissed in Palm Beach and Broward County according to Attorney Moore. Violations of the “Move Over” Law at least for now are difficult to attack in the county courts.
